It's Time To Get your MKS-50, Alpha Juno or SynthPlus Tone Library Organized!
Before attempting to load any of these *.SYX files, please see the LOADING & SAVING TONES section at the INFO Page
Using instructions from official Roland MKS‑50, Alpha Juno and SynthPlus Owner's Manuals re: Loading *.SYX files will NOT work
Bulk Dump instructions in Roland Owner's Manuals will not work when using generic SysEx Load/Save Utilities
Instructions in Roland Owner's Manuals will only work if two of the same model synths are connected via MIDI
If you want to know more about what you are downloading and the history of these Tone banks, read on...
If you are in a hurry and just want to download all the Tones and documentation of some large *.ZIP files, skip to the bottom of this page.
Over the past 30 years, several files of MKS-50, Alpha Juno and SynthPlus SysEx Bulk Dumps have appeared on the Internet. It's very difficult to sort out which SysEx files work (some are broken), what Tones are in the files and... who were the original programmers, anyway? Some files have been re‑named and re‑uploaded year after year, over and over again, creating duplicate files with different names, saved using a MIDI channel other than the default #1 (Yipes!!!) and it all adds to the confusion
I have attempted to sort out all the Tone bank files available online and have categorized everything including;
Descriptions of every *.SYX file
A list of all Tones in every *.SYX file
Credits to the original programmers
Documented any loading issues and fixed the problem(s)
Placing all known *.SYX files in one place for easy downloading
Supply the original MKS-50 Patch Parameters and Chord Memory file, if available
For standardization, used original filenames for files according to the date they were originally uploaded to the Internet
Changed the MIDI Channel to #1 (which should be the default for all MIDI files, IMO)
The *.SYX Tone bank files available for downloading are grouped into three categories:
1) Collections - Tone banks programmed by MKS-50, Alpha Juno-1 and Alpha Juno-2 owners
2) Factory Presets - The original Tones which were pre-loaded into factory fresh MKS-50, Alpha Juno-1 and Alpha Juno-2 synthesizers
3) Individual Tone SysEx Files - Collections of separate Tones in SysEx format for ReDominator, AU's and VST's
* Note: If your synth locks up at the Bulk Load MIDI.o message, try adjusting the transmit settings of your SysEx program to a slower speed

(b) Renaming the extender from RAW to SYX will turn the file into a valid SysEx BULK DUMP file
(c) In some *.ZIP files, NEWBANK1.SYX has been mis-labeled as FACTORYJuno.SYX
(d) Over the years, the Patch parameter files for these three Tone banks seem to have been separated and lost because of all the
different upload variations. These companion files install the original Patch names and preset parameters (Portamento Time,
Detune, Key Shift, etc...) which were originally intened for each Tone group. If you load the file NEWBANK1.SYX and don't load
it's companion file x-PatchParameters-MKS50-NEWBANK1.SYX on an MKS-50, the Tone names will not match-up with the Patch names and
other Patch parameters are lost as well such as the Portamento Time, Detune, Key Shift, etc... For example, Tone T-87 BangAGong
will display a different Patch name of P-87 --U-F-O--. After loading a companion file, the Patch names will match up with all
the Tone names from the NEWBANK1.SYX file. Likewise, NEWBANK2.SYX and NEWBANK3.SYX have their own unique Patch parameter files
(e) The Tones in these three banks are high tech sounds similar to those used by Tangerine Dream and other electronic musicians of
the 1980's era. If you are interested in pianos, violins, and woodwinds... this collection is NOT what you are looking for.
It contains soundtracks, background pads, arpeggiators and sound effects. Some of my favorites showing off the power of the
MKS-50 and the Alpha Juno's are "T Dream 8", "AutoSeqnzr", "UltraIntro", "MindProbe2", "Syn Intro", "Decay 7", "I-Beam",
"Sub Space", and always a crowd favorite... "Meddle". The Tones named TR-707(n) were created for use with a TR-707 drum machine
to take advantage of its accent and velocity MIDI outputs. This was before I had a computer and I was using the TR-707 as a
pseudo-sequencer/arpeggiator. Those ten Tones are not very useful when played via the keyboard, but they really shine when being
played using a sequencer/arpeggiator

Miscellaneous Notes For Tone Banks Found On The Internet
(a) There is a *.ZIP file named alphajuno.zip being distributed on the Internet which contains corrupted *.SYX files and they
will not load correctly on the MKS-50, Alpha Juno-1, Alpha Juno-2, HS-10 or HS-80. If you run across this file, you will
be wasting a lot of your time trying to make these work. Some of the files load but show garbage in the Tone name display
such as "M-11 LOtooTgBCm" and the sounds produce noise or unwanted Tones. Steer clear of anything with "junoton" in the
name. Other files with similar names exist such as PER-KRIS.SYX, MIKEJUNO.SYX, JOHNSEXT.SYX, etc... and contain some great
sounds so don't confuse those good files with these corrupted files! The good files are detailed in the lists shown above.
There are 15 corrupted *.SYX files contained inside alphajuno.zip and are named:
junoton1.syx junoton2.syx junoton3.syx junoton4.syx junoton5.syx junoton6.syx junoton7.syx junoton9.syx
factoryj.syx johnsext.syx matt2jun.syx matt3jun.syx mattjuno.syx mikejuno.syx per-kris.syx
(b) There is a file on the Internet called MKS50rig.MID which is supplied by Roland. It is designed to restore the original
factory presets of Tone bank 'a', Tone bank 'b', Patch group 'A', Patch group 'B' and the Chord Memory bank for an
MKS-50. It is a MIDI sequencer file and needs to be paused manually between each bank load. This file contains the same
Tone files in FACTORYA.SYX and FACTORYB.SYX. There is also file on the Internet called JUNO_ORI.MID supplied by Roland.
It is designed to restore the original factory presets of the RAM Tone bank. It is a MIDI sequencer file. This file
contains the same Tone files inFACTORYA.SYX. It will only work with Alpha Juno-1 and Alpha Juno-2 synths. It will not
load into an MKS-50. I refuse to post either of these *.MID sequencer files and make them available for downloading. I
think it's a crime for Roland to shy away from using the SysEx standard to load Tones and Patches, especially from a
customer support standpoint. One of the powerful things about using SysEx files is the error-free convenience. These
*.MID files are more trouble than you could imagine. Just do a quick search on the Web to see all of the complaints
about these *.MID files. Hey Roland... please use SysEx!!!

This sound chart shows the "Mythical Tone Bank" from very early Alpha Juno-1 synths. For unknown reasons, Roland changed the factory presets in the Alpha Juno-1 to a different Tone set. Only a handful of synths were shipped out with this early Tone bank version which makes it difficult to find. After a long search, and kudos to Matthias at the (now abandoned) Yahoo alphajuno-mks50 group, the search is finally over and you can download it here
I've discovered that there was a 2nd "Mythical Tone Bank" from very early Alpha Juno-1 and Alpha Juno-2 synths. During production, Roland changed the factory presets to a different Tone set. Only a handful of synths were shipped out with this early Tone bank version which makes it difficult to locate. Luckily, online visitor Dave W. from Australia sent me this file to share with other synth owners. This set is from his mint Alpha Juno-1 Japanese production model
This Tone bank (which I will call MYTHICAL2) is found on Page 53 of the newest version of the Alpha Juno‑2 Owner's Manual found here (Note: This Owner's Manual is an updated 1988 version, 2nd printing)

MKS-50 / Alpha Juno / SynthPlus Reader v1.3 - This free online utility reads MKS-50, Alpha Juno and SynthPlus Bulk Dump *.SYX files and displays all of the Tone names on screen. This can be useful for identifying specific sets to help organize your sound library. The cool thing is that you don't need to install any software. It's all done using Firefox, Safari, Chrome or whichever web browser you use. It's a new approach. This way, anyone with any computer can run the utility. Works with every browser except Internet Explorer (not really an issue for most people)
