Roland D-10 DIY AC Power Conversion

(Converting A Japanese 100V D-10 Model To A USA 117V D-10 Model)

Converting a Japanese D-10 synth from 100V over to USA 117V is much easier than it sounds. Only three parts are needed:

  • 1) Unplug the synthesizer AC cord from the power outlet!

  • 2) Unscrew the bottom case cover and unsolder the 2-prong AC power cable from the Fuse Board

  • 3) Unscrew the white plastic clamp holding the AC cable in place and remove the cable from the AC power cord inlet hole

  • 4) Unsolder the black wire connected to the transformer pole marked 100V (see Figure 1)

  • 5) Move the black wire over to the transformer pole marked "120V" and solder it in place (see Figure 1)

  • 6) Feed the new 3-Prong AC power cord through the power cord inlet hole

  • 7) Solder the 3-Prong AC cable HOT wire to the post on the Fuse Board labeled L2 (100/117/220/240)
    • Refer to Figure 2 to determine the HOT wire

  • 8) Solder the 3-Prong AC cable NEUTRAL wire to the post on the Fuse Board labeled 1 (WHITE/BLUE)
    • Refer to Figure 2 to determine the NEUTRAL wire

    9) Connect the 3-Prong AC cable GROUND wire to an existing screw terminal located somewhere on the metal chassis
    • This is ideally accomplished using a circular crimp connector, lock washer and an existing chassis screw (See Figures 3 & 4)

  • 10) Screw the white plastic clamps down to secure the new 3-Prong AC power cable in place

  • 11) IMPORTANT   Replace the 5mm x 20mm glass fuse on the Power Board (NOT on the Fuse Board!) with a new Slow‑Blow 2.5A/250V fuse
    • My Japanese 110V synth had a 4A/125V Fast Blow fuse on the Power Board which is not recommended for use with the USA 117V model
    • See Page 14 of the D‑10 Service Notes

  • 12) Reattach the bottom case cover before plugging the AC cord into the power outlet and turning on the power

Safety Precautions
Modifications made to any factory stock equipment will always pose an element of risk. Sometimes mistakes are made which are irreversible. Improper soldering and handling of electricity can cause serious injury and damage the synthesizer. Use caution when handling static sensitive devices and the PCB. Make sure you are properly grounded, working on a static‑free workbench or table and wearing eye protection during any soldering tasks. The author is not responsible for any damage or injury resulting from this DIY info. Use this DIY information at your own risk. And, I can't stress enough, the importance of wearing eye protection while soldering. That stuff flies everywhere sometimes!
