Roland D-110 117V 2-Prong To 3-Prong Power Cable DIY

2_PRONG_vs_3_PRONG

Back in the 1980's and 1990's there were no rules in the USA which required synth and sampler manufacturers to use 3‑prong grounded power cables. Naturally, Roland took advantage of this and cut their production costs by only installing 2‑prong power cables. As the business credo says, "Who gives a shit about safety when there's a profit to be made?"

So why is this an important modification? Just ask any synth or sampler owner who has plugged their gear into an ungrounded mixing board. It's a quick way to fry transistors in a synth or sampler audio circuit. Grounding also provides an extra level of safety in the event of a major short circuit

Converting a D‑10 117V synth from a 2‑prong to a 3‑prong grounded AC power cable is much easier than it sounds. Only two parts are needed:

  • 1) Unplug the synthesizer AC power cable from the power outlet!

  • 2) Unscrew the top case cover and unsolder the 2-prong AC power cable from the Power Supply Board

  • 3) Unscrew the thick square black metal plate holding the power cable in place and remove the cable from the black plastic cable retaining clamp

  • 4) Feed the new 3-prong grounded AC power cable through the thick square black metal plate and reuse the black plastic cable retaining clamp

  • 5) Solder the 3-prong cable HOT wire to the post on the Power Supply Board labeled 505
    • Refer to Figure 1 to determine the HOT wire (the HOT wire is usually BLACK or BROWN)

  • 6) Solder the 3-prong cable NEUTRAL wire to the post on the Power Supply Board labeled 504
    • Refer to Figure 1 to determine the NEUTRAL wire (the NEUTRAL wire is usually WHITE or BLUE)

    7) Connect the 3-prong cable GROUND wire to an existing screw terminal located somewhere on the metal chassis
    • This is ideally accomplished using a circular crimp connector, lock washer and an existing chassis screw (See Figures 2 & 4)

  • 8) Attach the thick square black metal plate and secure the new 3-prong AC power cable in place

  • 9) Reattach the top case cover before plugging the AC cord into the power outlet and turning on the power

Safety Precautions
Modifications made to any factory stock equipment will always pose an element of risk. Sometimes mistakes are made which are irreversible. Improper soldering and handling of electricity can cause serious injury and damage the synthesizer. Use caution when handling static sensitive devices and the PCB. Make sure you are properly grounded, working on a static‑free workbench or table and wearing eye protection during any soldering tasks. And, I can't stress enough, the importance of wearing eye protection while soldering. That stuff flies everywhere sometimes!
