S‑50 / S‑550 / S‑330 / W‑30 Disk Image Reader (v1.7) This utility reads S‑50, S‑550, S‑330 and W‑30 Disk Image Files (*.OUT, *.IMG, *.ISO, *.S50, *.S33, *.W30) from a computer hard drive, USB flash drive, SD card, microSD card, etc... and will display sample information. It will display Patch Name Lists, Tone Name Lists, Unused Sample Space, Sample Frequency Rates, Disk Label, Audio Output Jack Assignments, and System Version info. It is also able to read S‑550 and W‑30 80MB Hard Drive files, 100MB/250MB *.ZIP Drive files and 700MB CD-ROM Disk Image files and will display a long list of all the 3.5" floppy disks contained within. This can be useful for identifying specific sound sets to help organize your sampler library and also for maximizing unused sample space on existing disks. The cool thing is that you don't need to install any software. It's all done using Firefox, Safari, Chrome or whichever web browser you like to use. It's a new approach. Any O/S on any computer can run this utility. Works with every browser except Internet Explorer (not really an issue for most people. In fact... I'll call it a feature!!!). Another cool thing is that you can simply save the HTML file as a webpage and run it locally. That way you don't need to be connected to the Internet to use it. If you prefer to use this utility offline, easy instructions are in the Release Notes and an example screenshot of the utility is here S‑50 / S‑550 / S‑330 / W‑30 Disk Image Reader (v1.7) Operating System: Any Computer With A Web Browser S‑750 / S‑760 / S‑770 / DJ‑70 Disk Image Reader (v1.5) This utility reads S‑750, S‑760, S‑770, DJ‑70 and DJ‑70MKII Disk Image Files (*.OUT, *.IMG, *.S7x, *.DJx) from a computer hard drive, USB flash drive, SD card, microSD card, etc... and will display a formatted listing for Volume, Performance, Patch, Partial and Sample names. I'm able to take my giant collection of high quality *.WAV files and convert them quickly by simply dragging and dropping them into a folder and then running the utility. Since there's no need for setting up a microphone or plugging in an instrument to get the sound levels just right, there's no time wasted. Quick and easy!!! These utilities are able to convert the original wavesamples to either 15kHz or 30kHz depending on the quality desired and the amount of disk space you want to use. The program is very intuitive and will fill up the disk automatically for you. It is also possible to store additional sounds on any existing W‑30 disk image. When the converter is run, the new wavesamples will be converted and added to the original disk file rather than creating an entirely new blank disk image. This can be useful for optimizing space in your sampler libraries by increasing the number of sounds on each disk For W‑30: WAV2W30 Utility v0.40 For DJ‑70: WAV2DJ70 Utility v0.45 Operating System: Windows XP / 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 Miscellaneous 20‑Disk Sample Collection #1 (S‑50 / S‑550 / S‑330 / W‑30) This is a collection of unusual S‑50, S‑550, S‑330 and W‑30 samples from my library. I am sharing these with anyone who wants them. Some will think these are completely worthless while others will think they are magical. Most are sound effects, spoken word or sounds of nature plus a few music‑worthy samples. I created some of these from scratch and others are some I have sampled from movies, TV broadcasts, LP's and CD‑ROM's. Others are 25+ years old and I have forgotten the original source so... apologies to the original creators. All samples are saved in the *.OUT format and may be easily loaded into your S‑50, S‑550, S‑330 or W‑30 sampler by using the OMNIFLOP or SDISK utilities to create a 3.5" Roland sound library disk. You can also use these disk image files with a USB Floppy Disk Drive Emulator. You will still need to use official Roland Startup Disks to boot your sampler because these are only Sound Disks 1. Most are W‑30 disks converted over to the S‑50, S‑550 and S‑330 formats. If you don't own an MKS‑70, JX‑10 or a Jupiter‑6, some of these samples are sure to please. The sounds were custom made for bands like Roxy Music, Yes, Tangerine Dream and Black Sabbath specially created for use on stage, covering both leads and sound effects." I recognize several of these sounds from various Tangerine Dream LP's and OST's including Thief, Logos, Poland, Phaedra, Tangram and Force Majeure. These samples are not useful for everyday use but I found them to be interesting and historic sounds. The OST for "Thief" was what originally launched me into the amazing world of synths and samplers TANGERINE_DREAM-SFX-1-W30.IMG TANGERINE_DREAM-SFX-2-W30.IMGDownload 2‑Disk Tangerine Dream Mellotron Sound FX In One *.ZIP File (W‑30 Format) W-30 Sample Collection (Unofficial W‑30 Homepage) A collection of 59 W-30 disks from an external website in Japan External Link To The Unofficial W-30 Homepage 16th Century Early Instruments Collection (S‑50) Another donation from a generous online visitor. You will still need to use official Roland Startup Disks to boot your sampler because these are only Sound Disks S‑50 USB Set #1 ‑ RSB‑501 through RSB‑508 + Custom Samples (S‑50 *.IMG Format) S‑50 USB Set #2 ‑ Mostly Files Converted From W‑30 Disks (S‑50 *.IMG Format) S‑50 USB Set #3 ‑ Complete S‑550 RSB Library Converted To S‑50 Format (S‑50 *.IMG Format) S‑550 USB Set #1 ‑ RSB‑5501 through RSB‑5506 + Custom Samples (S‑550 / S‑330 / W‑30 Format) S‑550 USB Set #2 ‑ RSB‑501 through RSB‑508 + Custom Samples (S‑550 / S‑330 / W‑30 Format) Note: There is an error with one of the files in these *.ZIP's RSB_505-08.OUT is a duplicate of RSB_505-07.OUT (ASSORTED KICKS #1) Download this extra file (S-550_RSB_505-08_updated.OUT) for the correct version (ASSORTED SNARES #1) Also, the alternate name on the disk label = USB-503 #8 (File was taken from the L-CD1 CD-ROM) Tyrone Thorn from New Zealand spent a lot of time and renamed several S‑50 and S‑550 disk image files (and more) for use with a FlashFloppy updated GOTEK. These are very useful for quick viewing all the filenames with a long descriptive filename on a GOTEK's OLED Examples Before: 019.IMG After: 019_ETHNIC_GONGS1_RSB-502-09.IMG Before: 045.IMG After: 045_MARTIN_STEEL_RSB-5505-05.IMG Before: 086.IMG After: 086_LSD_-_BLUE_BOY_1967_EPISODE_FROM_DRAGNET.IMGRenamed S‑50 & S‑550 USB Sets With Long Descriptive Filenames (This Download Contains An Additional Five *.Zip Files) Bonus: S-7xx Samples (S‑750 / S‑760 / S‑770) A very generous online visitor sent me some samples which definitely need to be shared with other S‑750 / S‑760 / S‑770 owners. This is a fantastic set of S‑7xx samples created by David Marshall who was a Roland UK Product Specialist back in the 1990's The description states, "... a selection of samples from various sources all superbly looped. Of particular note are rarely sampled synths like the Mini 700s now in full poly glory... The Emu Emulator II selection, particularly the choirs are again wonderful in full stereo..." A big collection here with choice samples from the TB‑303, Mini Korg 700s, JD‑800, Moog Bass, Emulator II, D‑50, Juno‑106, Hohner D6, MC‑4, U‑20, Choirs, Acoustics, Strings... plenty of new stuff to completely trash your already planned weekend!
You will still need to use an official Roland Startup Disk to boot your sampler because these are only Sound Disks. Unlike normal S‑750/S‑760/S‑770 Sound Disks, the original uploader decided to create this collection as Low Density DS/DD floppies... not the standard High Density DS/HD size. There are two extra files included in the *.ZIP download: A short MP3 demo and a PDF description. Note that these files will NOT work with a "Plain Jane" factory firmware GOTEK installed in an S‑760 because they are Low Density. Otherwise, these disk image files will work just fine as‑is on a GOTEK updated with FlashFloppy v3.9a or greater * ↳ ↳ Note For S‑760 Owners Using A GOTEK With FlashFloppy↵ ↵ *In order to use these Low Density DS/DD files on a GOTEK with FlashFloppy, you will need to install FlashFloppy v3.9a or greater and add this line to your FF.CFG file interface = ibmpc-hdout The S‑760 has a strange setup when accessing floppy disk files. Roland used a more expensive 3.5" DD which serves a dual purpose by reading and saving both low density 720KB DS/DD and high density 1.44MB DS/HD disks. This means that with the factory installed 3.5" FDD, you are able to use the "Convert Load" command to load S‑550 & W‑30 disks on the S‑760, boot with the default high density 1.44MB Operating System disk and also load/save high density Sound Disks. Some of the older GOTEK setups had issues reading/saving both densities on the S‑760. There was a density‑select issue with the S‑760 which has existed since FF v2.2a but Keir Fraser has fixed this starting with FF v3.9a Roland UK Sample Collection (50 Disks In S‑7xx Format) Roland UK Sample Collection (50 Disks In SCSI2SD *.IMG Format) Roland UK Sample Collection (50 Disks In CD-ROM *.ISO Format) This file is for use with the Roland S‑760 Sampler. It is a 700MB CD‑ROM *.ISO disc image file of the entire David Marshall collection. I have used this file to burn a Roland S‑760 proprietary CD‑ROM (Tested and verified working). It has also been tested and verified with SCSI2SD, raSCSI and ZuluSCSI devices JMD Freeware Samples (S‑760) Included here is a link to download an S‑760 Freeware Sample CD‑ROM available from JMD. Someone took great care to create these high quality and unique sounds. This is in *.ISO format and contains 10 volumes, 93 patches and 562 samples of various synths including the Roland U‑20/220, Kawai K‑4, FM & Subtractive Synthesis + more. I highly recommend this CD‑ROM! Note: This CD‑ROM from JMD is in a Roland proprietary format so your Mac or Windows PC will not be able to read or mount this *.ISO file. You will need a third‑party program to burn this Roland CD‑ROM. You can find detailed instructions to burn it by using some free software available for download at this link. This means you can't back them up easily. This is a cool way to archive and/or clone Roland proprietary format ZIP disks and 80MB Hard Drives. ZIP Disk #1, ZIP Disk #2 and ZIP Disk #3 are the first in a series of 80MB cloned ZIP Disk and 80MB Hard Drive image files each containing 64 RSB Sound Disks. To use these disk image files to create your own cloned ZIP disk or 80MB hard drive for the S‑550 or W‑30, see the instructions at this link
CD-ROM's
Way, way back in the old days... around Windows version 3.1, Gabor Pikacs wrote a cool program which amazingly still works today on a Windows 7 (32‑bit) computer. Obviously a programmer who follows the rules! I've been using his program to create CD‑ROM's which can be read by the W‑30. The program creates *.iso disk image files of 80MB hard drives. It's very easy to burn your own CD‑ROM's by downloading and using these *.iso image files. Also included is the Roland L-CD1 CD‑ROM which can be read by any Roland S‑Series or W‑30 sampler with an external CD‑ROM
Loading AKAI CD‑ROM's From An External CD‑ROM or SCSI2SD Device The S‑760 and SP‑700 are the only Roland S‑Series samplers which have the ability to load AKAI S1000 and S1100 library format CD‑ROM's. This greatly expands the capabilities of these two samplers because the AKAI library of 3rd‑Party CD‑ROM's is gigantic. Instructions for loading AKAI CD‑ROM's can be found here ❖ I created an online utility that checks AKAI CD-ROM *.ISO files to determine if they are in S1000/S1100 or S3000 CD‑ROM format. This is useful because Roland S‑760 and SP‑700 samplers are able to "Convert Load" AKAI S1000/S1100 CD‑ROM *.ISO files but are not able to load AKAI S3000 CD‑ROM *.ISO files. The utility is available at this link
SysEx File Verification Utility - This free utility reads SysEx files from 100+ synths and samplers. It will display The Op Code, identify the synth or sampler make and model and suggest a MIDI channel to use when loading. It's a handy utility to verify unknown SysEx files and/or enable "broken" SysEx files to load using the correct MIDI channel. The cool thing is that you don't need to install any software. It's all done using Safari, Firefox, Chrome or whichever web browser you use. It's a new approach. Any O/S on any computer can run this utility. Works with every browser except Internet Explorer (Not really an issue for most people. In fact, I'll call it a "feature") SysEx File Verification Utility Operating System: Any Computer With A Web Browser Large Sample Library And Resource By far, the largest resource for free S‑50/330/550/750/760/770 samples, W‑30 samples, software and info is at S‑Group, the original homepage for the Roland Sampler Users' Group (Note: There are a few disks missing from the libraries because some of the *.ZIP files do not work) SGroup.ca (External Web Link)
